How to turn volunteering leave into volunteering hours
A practical checklist for CSR and ESG leads launching, activating or reviving an employee volunteering programme. It takes you from policy to participation, evidence and impact.
Volunteer participation checklist for businesses
Most organisations already have a volunteering policy. Far fewer have the participation to show for it. Leave gets offered and goes unused. A handful of teams do most of the volunteering, and whole sites go quiet.
That gap matters more than it looks. A policy shows intent, but only participation produces evidence. When a bid evaluator asks for Social Value Act evidence, or the board wants community investment broken down by site, a policy document won't answer the question. Hours, reach and coverage across the business will.
Last year, 140 million employee volunteering hours went unused in the UK (RVS/Censuswide, June 2025). The will is usually there. What's missing is a structure that makes taking part easy, visible and expected.
Five parts. One active programme.
-
A programme people understand
Everyone knows what's on offer, why it matters and how to get started.
-
Volunteering that stays visible
Momentum that carries on long after launch day, all year round.
-
Advocates in every team
Participation that spreads across the whole organisation, not just from the centre.
-
Leadership that shows up
Visible support that tells people volunteering is part of how you work.
-
Evidence ready when you need it
Answers for your board, ESG report or next bid, without the year-end scramble.
Who it's for
